VIA confirms talking with ST about graphics cooperation

VIA Technologies has confirmed that the graphics division of STMicroelectronics (ST) is indeed the candidate it has been talking with concerning its graphics chip operation. The chipset designer said that after initial negotiations, it plans to cooperate with ST by obtaining graphics chips or related technology from the company, instead of acquiring ST’s graphics unit directly.

However, the deal has not been officially finalized.

According to sources, the primary focus of the cooperation is ST’s new-generation, better- performance Kyro III graphics core, not ST’s present product lines. Motherboard and graphics card manufacturers agree that the technology would allow VIA to effectively enhance its competitiveness in the desktop graphics chip market, especially as Intel has raised the graphics performance of its 845GL integrated chipset to the same level as that of the high-end 845G.

At CeBIT Hannover, both companies introduced their new chip products. VIA displayed five lines – its P4-based chipset P4X333, DVD-ROM drive chip, Ethernet chip, multimedia chip for IAs (information appliances) and new-generation C3 processor. ST launched its latest graphics chip, the Kyro II SE, with a clock speed reaching 200MHz. However, the clock speeds of the latest products from competitors ATI Technologies and Nvidia have achieved 300MHz.

Naja, der Chip dürfte ja eigentlich fertig sein (hoffe ich) und wenn das mit VIA klappt kann der doch auch produziert werden! Sollte eigentlich kein größeres Problem sein!

ich glaub ned wirklich dran dass er im sommer kommt. er hätte wenigstens zur cebit vorgestellt werden müssen. so aber geht da nicht viel. Und wenn man solch ne Messe nicht nutzt ist man echt selber Schuld....

ausserdem ist es doch egal wer ihn produziert, wichtig ist dass man weiss dass er da ist. So treibt man doch jeden ins Lager des Gegners, denn ich werde mir jetzt wohl auch ne radeon holen.

Hab ich was verpasst oder ist die CeBit tatsächlich nurdrei Tage lang :eyes:? Die geht noch bis zum 20.! Vielleicht wird ja noch was angekündigt? Kann doch sein!

Kyro & VIA the question?

As far as we can tell VIA did not announced any plans at yesterdays conference to buy the Kyro Graphics division of STM. From what we can tell VIA are not interested in the current tech I.E the Kyro 4800, but instead VIA want to use the next generation of cards (Kyro III). The deal sounds like is has not been officially finalized and talks are still going on. There is still a chance VIA will announced a partner ship with ImgTech at CeBIT. Then again we could be completely off and VIA have no interest. This site has arranged a meeting with ImgTech this weekend at CeBIT. We will try to get some more information out of them as well as some Kyro 4800 benchmarks.

Speaking about the 4800, its drivers will work with the 4500 but for the enhanced T&L to work you need the hardware enhancements in the 4800. As I said a few posts before the 4800 has software T&L with a bit of hardware added in. It should still be treated as software T&L even though its faster then a normal software T&L engine. New drivers for all Kyro cards will be out at the same time as the 4800 hits the shops.

BTW: enT&L ist anscheinend wirklich eine Mischung aus Hard- und Sorftware-T&L, wie man dem Anhang entnehmen kann!
