"Mike Hara says yields are not what they were expecting to be at this point.

Cycle times will be pushed out until yields improve.

Definitely pointing the finger at "the foundry".

Hinting that near-term margin goals may not be met.

GPU demand very healthy, but supply constrained by 0.13u issues.

NVDA has maintained market share due to low-end/mainstream strength, which the FX 5200 is apparently defending successfully. Says it was partly luck that they stuck with 0.15u for NV34 and it turned out well.

We screwed up on NV30. It was short on technology, late to market..."

Yields)

"The GeForce FX 5900 (Ultra) is able to outpace the (nearest competitor) in all relevant benchmarks and can reclaim the performance throne for NVIDIA," said Lars Weinand, graphics card editor for Tom's Hardware Guide (www.tomshardware.com), an internationally known leading hardware Web site. "The card offers unrivaled full scene antialiasing (FSAA) speed combined with very good anisotropic filtering (AF) image quality and performance, thanks to the new Detonator(TM) FX driver, giving it a comfortable lead over its rival."

NVIDIA Leverages Denali for PCI Express Design Verification

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 19, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Denali Software, Inc., the leading provider of electronic design automation (EDA) tools and intellectual property (IP) for chip interface design and verification, today announced that NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) has signed a multi-year agreement to license Denali's verification tools for use in its chip design efforts. NVIDIA engineers are now using Denali's PureSpec(TM) product to verify the correct operation of
the PCI Express interface in its chip designs. The tool helps NVIDIA engineers catch potential bugs early in the development cycle before the design is implemented in silicon.

The PCI Express architecture is a new serial interconnect technology that replaces the current AGP standard in motherboards for the next generation of graphics applications. PCI Express significantly increases bandwidth between the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) by enabling a balanced distribution of bandwidth to those applications that require it the most.

"NVIDIA is dedicated to delivering the highest quality products for our customers. PCI Express is a key technology for our next-generation GPUs and we've developed a very sophisticated verification environment to ensure the quality of this new interface," said Gopal Solanki, vice president of hardware engineering at NVIDIA. "Denali's reputation for verifying memory interfaces allowed us the opportunity to look at their product for PCI Express verification. As we evaluated PureSpec, we knew we had a winner when it caught a
number of bugs that went undetected using other methods. We continue to be impressed by the tools performance, and we have incorporated it into our overall verification methodology for our PCI Express interfaces."

"What NVIDIA is doing with graphics processing technology is truly amazing," said Denali vice president of marketing Kevin Silver. "They consistently push the envelope in terms of design and verification technology, and they do it successfully under tremendous time-to-market pressures. With PureSpec, Denali is providing NVIDIA with best-in-class solution for both verifying their PCI Express interface and ensuring interoperability with other chips using the PCI Express standard. PureSpec is being used in the vast majority of the current PCI Express chip design efforts, and our unique ability to enable pre-silicon interoperability verification is a key value to NVIDIA and the PCI Express community in general."

About PureSpec

PureSpec is a verification IP product used by chip designers to simulate, and verify PCI Express design interfaces. PureSpec models all devices in the PCI Express topology, including the root complex, switch, endpoint, and PCI Express to PCI bridge. Within PureSpec, all protocol layers (physical, data link, transaction) of the PCI Express specification are completely modeled and can be simulated simultaneously or used separately. The product contains thousands of
assertions that are monitored during simulation to ensure compliance with the PCI Express specification, and interoperability with other PCI Express devices. Injected errors and error conditions are also flagged and recovered according to PCI Express specifications. The PureSpec product is built on the proven product architecture of Denali's MMAV product, which has been used to verify complex
memory interfaces for thousands of successful designs, and provides seamless
integrations to all popular EDA tools and verification languages. Proven product
platform, dedicated customer support, and unmatched EDA modeling and
verification expertise make PureSpec the best-in-class verification IP solution
for PCI Express designs. The PureSpec product is available now for customer
evaluation at: www.denali.com/purespec

Sources among graphics cards manufacturers claim that a number of companies plan to showcase their NV36- and NV38-based graphics cards at Computex Taipei 2003 in late September. The NV36 is believed to be a successor of the NV31 also known as the GeForce FX 5600, whereas the NV38 is a follower of the NV35 aka the GeForce FX 5900 GPU.

In case NVIDIA and its add-in-board partners only showcase the NV36 and NV38 products in late September behind closed doors, we will only see the actual products powered by these graphics processors in October or later. This leads us to conclude that there will be no next-generation NV40 products this calendar year since no NVIDIA’s AIB partners want to release two high-end products in one quarter due to very obvious business reasons. Additionally, we should also remember about 6-month product cycle followed by both leading graphics companies.

To sum up, NVIDIA will renew its products lineup this October or November, just as NVIDIA’s Investor Relations VP Mike Hara claimed early this Summer. The actual availability of the graphics cards should happen in 5-6 months after the GeForce FX 5600 and GeForce FX 5900-series' first appearance.

ATI Technologies plans to release its code-named R360 and RV360-based products in September, little bit earlier than the rival. In this case I also would not suggest that ATI’s code-named R420 will show up this year, even though there are still some unconfirmed talks about such announcement among various sources.

"
Update: We emailed id Software guru, John Carmack about his experience with NV3x hardware on Pixel Shading performance, and this was his reply:

GD: John, we've found that NVIDIA hardware seems to come to a crawl whenever Pixel Shader's are involved, namely PS 2.0..

Have you witnessed any of this while testing under the Doom3 environment?

"Yes. NV30 class hardware can run the ARB2 path that uses ARB_fragment_program, but it is very slow, which is why I have a separate NV30 back end that uses NV_fragment_program to specify most of the operations as 12 or 16 bit instead of 32 bit."

The officials from NVIDIA confirmed a “whole-new” NV4x family to be launched next year (probably, calendar year, editor) and bring “programmable shading and cinematic computing to a new level”.
In Q1 some of NV4x will be in production. By Q2 many of NV4x will be in production to bring the margins up. By Q3 “almost entire” family of NV4x will be ramping up in production. No indications whether “calendar” or “fiscal” quarters, though.
When asked about NV40 tapeout, the management did not comment saying “We do not comment on tapeouts; we just comment on production ramps and design wins. There will be time to talk about NV40, today is our time to talk about 5950 and 5700…”
NVIDIA will offer top-to-bottom lineup of GPUs and MCPs with support for PCI Express.
NVIDIA is now sampling customers with its “first PCI Express technology”.
NVIDIA is excited about the PCI Express and will surely be on track with it, but denied to talk about the speed of transition, etc.
NVIDIA anticipates “something like” 10 different versions of GPU products next year, the majority of which will be PCI Express, as I understood from Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO.

ATI might beg to differ

By Fuad Abazovic: Donnerstag 13 November 2003, 07:34

CONFERENCE CALLS are the time when companies get really honest since it's against the law to mislead people that invest money in your company.
In the last one, Nvidia's head Jen Hsun said that low K chip manufacturing process is dangerous and that’s why Nvidia didn’t go for it.

We heard, however, that Nvidia had plans to use this marchitecture but then simply could not make it work at least for now due to engineering problems. We have to remind you that Radeon 9600XT, RV360 is the first of ATI's Low K cores and we just received one of the retail cards that are becoming available in retail shops this week.

Nvidia engineers were expecting ATI to face problems with 0.13µ (micron) but ATI just introduced the second generation of these chips and the more recent ones Radeon 9600XT are made with Low K, and it's 0.13µ, while the first of ATI's 0.13µ generation, the R350, Radeon 9600PRO and PRO minus were shipping for quite some time in thousands or even more. ATI claimed it had an extraordinarily good yield.

So Nvidia first said 0.13µ is bad, and now 0.13µ micron Low K is described "dangerous" which seems to us has the implication that ATI has the lead in chip manufacturing, as it doesn't regard Low K as dangerous.

If I may say so, ATI was wiser, and tested this new manufacturing process before releasing it, while keeping in reserve products and chips just in case things didn't pan out.

Nvidia may use Low K in the future but we suspect it's now ultra cautious about steaming ahead with new technologies after it got burnt on the NV30 and attempted to go ahead too fast with an unproved .13µ process. µ

Gigabyte Technology told some of its partners from the Russian Federation it would gradually decrease the share of Powered by ATI graphics cards in its product family. The company will from now concentrate on NVIDIA-based solutions, according to the sources close to the company.

Gigabyte Technology was among the first firms to start producing more lucrative Powered by ATI RADEON solutions in early 2002 after switching from NVIDIA-based GeForce3 graphics cards. It looks like now the company is going to rearrange its work with graphics chips partners once again and concentrate on products from Santa Clara, California-based NVIDIA Corporation. Even though the company has not said it would stop producing graphics cards using graphics processors from ATI Technologies, it has indicated a clear plan to concentrate on NVIDA-based offerings, therefore, it may mean that the share of Powered by ATI products among all graphics solutions made by Gigabyte Technology will be considerably less than 50%

It worth to note that the Russian Federation is among the strongest market for NVIDIA – the company has a sounding market share there and is very consistent about its investments to further promote the GeForce brand. It would be logical for Gigabyte Technology to offer more products better accepted by the market.

Some sources close to Gigabyte Technology in Europe said the company is not going to loose any focus on Powered by ATI products.

Currently Powered by ATI graphics cards are produced by the majority of tier-one mainboard makers – ASUS, Gigabyte and ECS. MSI is making Powered by ATI solutions for some of its partners, such as Medion, and may also consider own-branded solutions with RADEON graphics processor. As a result, it may be logical for Gigabyte to withdraw from competition with other tier-one companies.

It is generally believed that strategy involving a number of graphics processors developers helps computer components manufacturers to better control the costs of their products and deliver solutions accepted by a broader market. This year a great number of companies decided to build graphics cards based on VPUs and GPUs from both ATI Technologies and NVIDIA. The list includes ASUSTeK Computer, Creative Technology, Gigabyte Technology, Diamond Multimedia, MSI, SUMA and a number of others.

A Gigabyte Technology spokesperson had not returned a call for comments and elaborations on the company's graphics plans by press time.

Nvidia's NV 40 tapes out

WE CAN FINALLY confirm that Nvidia's NV40 taped out in the last days of December of 2003 and that Nvidia is working hard to finish everything up before boards using the technology go on sale.

Nvidia's partners are still without chips and it seems that they will got their sample NV40s to do necessary PCB adjustments no earlier than late February 2004.

It's going to be a close call whether Nvidia partners manage to show some products at CeBIT and it will be great loss for a them if they don’t since ATI will show off the R420 at the Hannover show.

It takes around 120 days from tape out to final shipping products so it seems that we might see cards based on NV40 shipping in April or May.

We do believe that Nvidia will use CeBIT to trumpet its NV40 technology, however.

The fight between NV40 and R420 will be very interesting but we don’t believe that either chip will be significantly better then the other, with both having similar performance.

nVidia has announced that it has initiated a co-operation with NASA and the exploration of Mars. The company's graphics technology and know-how is used to recreate and illustrate the surface of the planet and to plan missions for NASA's Mars module Spirit. This is done by analyzing the data that Spirit continuously transmits to Earth and subsequently build up a photorealistic virtual reality. It's probable that the second NASA rover named Opportunity, Spirit's late twin, will use the same technology when it lands on January the 24th.

Laurence Edwards, team lead for 3D visualization and surface reconstruction from NASA Ames Research Centre, has touched the topic. This is his comments:

"Nvidia technology allows NASA to visualize the Martian terrain in photorealistic virtual reality, greatly enhancing scientists' understanding of the environment and streamlining analysis. With this capability, scientists step into a visually engaging model of the planet's surface and interactively study multiple perspectives--front, back, side views--of every object the rovers investigate to fully explore all options for rover routes and experiments."

Today, with this new technology, NASA can simulate the lighting and surface conditions expected on Mars when an experiment is to be conducted. If a rock will cast a shadow, obscuring a feature of interest, scientists on the ground will know about this effect in advance and plan around it. In the future, we envision scientists sitting within a large wrap-around display and programming rover movements and experiments using simple touch-screen or voice commands."

A company who demonstrated an important trend towards single-chip core-logic products is likely to step back a bit from this promising initiative this year, as high-performance DirectX 9 graphics core NVIDIA wants to incorporate into its upcoming product is too complex for an already feature-packed media and communication processor for AMD64 CPUs.

Sources close to NVIDIA Corporation said the firm’s code-named CK8-04/Pro core-logic will consist of two chips: an MCP and IGP1 “DirectX 9.0 Graphics CK8-04 Companion Chip”. This will be NVIDIA’s first chipset with graphics core designed for AMD Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX microprocessors and also the company’s first core-logic for AMD’s 64-bit CPUs that consists of two actual chips. It should be noted that only version with “integrated” DirectX 9 graphics core will require additional chip, whereas the CK8-04/Pro itself will still exist as a discrete solution for AMD64 chips.

NVIDIA’s CK8-04/Pro solution is rumored to sport 1.0GHz HyperTransport bus, PCI Express x16 for graphics cards, PCI Express x1 for add-in cards, 4 PCI slots, 2-channel Parallel ATA-33/66/100/133 controller, 4 Serial ATA-150 ports, 10 USB 2.0 ports, Azalia 24-bit/96kHz 8-channel audio and so.

Precise specifications of IGP1, the “DirectX 9.0 Graphics CK8-04 Companion Chip”, are to be determined at a later date. In fact, it is not fully clear, whether the “companion chip” is a separate graphics core, such as, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, that should be plugged into mainboard and utilize system memory as frame-buffer, or a specifically designed chip that operates via a special bus.

The company will sample both new chips in the second quarter of the year and is said to start mass production of the new products in the Q3 2004.

Generally speaking, NVIDIA’s “companion chip” for its CK8-04/Pro core-logic does not significantly affect the firm’s ongoing trend towards single-chip core-logic sets. With the introduction if CK8-04/Pro the majority of the firm’s chipsets for AMD64 processors will consist of one silicon, delivering the Santa Clara, California-based firm an advantage over competing VIA and SiS, whose core-logic sets for AMD64 include two chips and are more expensive to make. Apparently, platform solutions with integrated graphics are too complex for one chip, therefore, all chipset developers will offer dual-core products with integrated graphics cores, though, NVIDIA will still be in a position to offer one chip for discrete platforms.

Officials from NVIDIA Corp. did non comment on the story.

Kennt ihr schon das hier ?

http://www.ttecx.de/files/news/arti....txt&showtopic=

Link: Nvidia Earnings Plunge (http://www.thestreet.com/_yahoo/tech/kcswanson/10176794.html?cm_ven=YAHOO&cm_cat=FREE&cm_ite=NA)

Ein paar Auszüge aus dem ganzen :

Net income at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based totaled $5.1 million or 3 cents a share, down nearly 80% from the year-ago profit of $24.2 million or 14 cents a share. Analysts were expecting 15 cents on a pro forma basis.

On a postclose conference call, Huang offered several reasons for the dropoff in Nvidia's core desktop graphics processor segment, which suffered a 17% sequential unit decline.

First, the company encountered unexpectedly aggressive pricing from integrated graphics chips (read: Intel) that compete with Nvidia's own stand-alone, higher-end products.

Nvidia's NV43 is Geforce 6600

GT and standard version

By Fuad Abazovic (=R520): Freitag 06 August 2004, 14:55

WE PROMISED YOU here that we would find out what the name of NV43 will be, and we have.
The NV43 will be known as the Geforce 6600 from now on. There will be two versions - a 6600 standard and a 6600GT with a huge difference in clock speed. <> 6600 standard will be clocked at 300MHz+ and will use DDR/DDR2 memory while the 6600GT will be clocked close to 500MHz core and will use almost that fast memory, GDDR3.

It's an eight pipeline part like we suggested before and will be available in volume production in late September.

Just a few days now until this card appears and I was previously told that NV43, 6600 – not Nokia, Geforce will be able to use SLI mode. For $199. µ

LOS ANGELES, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Chip designer Nvidia Corp. (NVDA.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said it will report better-than-expected revenue for its third quarter on share gains in the personal computer graphics market, sending its stock soaring.

The strong outlook for the just-finished period came one quarter after the company disappointed investors with results that were well below expectations.

Analysts were surprised by the timing and magnitude of Nvidia's share gains in the market for advanced PC graphics chips.

"We thought they were doing well against ATI Technologies but frankly I didn't expect it to be that material until the January quarter," said Brian Alger, an analyst at Pacific Growth Equities. He does not own shares in the stock.

Apparent strong demand for components from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) for its Xbox video game console also helped in the quarter, Alger said.

Santa Clara, California-based Nvidia said it expects to report revenue for the fiscal quarter ended Oct. 24 of $510 million to $515 million, up from its prior forecast of $470 million to $502 million. Gross margin is expected to fall in a range of 31.7 percent to 32.7 percent.

Analysts polled by Reuters Estimates on average expected revenue of $491.6 million in the quarter.

Shares in Nvidia rose nearly 14 percent to $15.15 in after-hours trade on INET, from a close of $13.34 on Nasdaq.

Nvidia will report full results for the quarter on Nov. 4

Nvidia Corp. 3Q Profit Up on GeForce 6

Nvidia Corp. Third-Quarter Earnings Rise on GeForce 6 Shipments

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Nvidia Corp. on Thursday said third quarter earnings rose on the strength of its new GeForce graphics product.
The news sent Nvidia shares up 94 cents, or 6.1 percent, to $16.35 in aftermarket trading, after closing the regular Nasdaq session up 28 cents at $15.41.

For the three months ended Oct. 24, the maker of graphics and digital medial processors posted earnings of $25.9 million, or 15 cents per share, up from $6.4 million, or 4 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose to $515.6 million from $486.1 million last year, driven by the success of its GeForce 6 graphics processor. Unit shipments of all GeForce 6 GPUs increased by more than 500 percent from a year ago.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call predicted earnings of 9 cents per share on revenue of $509.2 million.

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/041104/earns_nvidia_corp_1.html

Nvidia selber zieht dies ernsthaft in Betracht.

@Quasar

Nvidia Goes Gangbusters

By Troy Wolverton
TheStreet.com Staff Reporter
5/12/2005 7:48 PM EDT

Updated from 4:41 p.m. EDT
Nvidia's (NVDA:Nasdaq - commentary - research) stock soared after the closing bell Thursday after the graphics chipmaker reported net income tripled in its first quarter.

The results, which were fueled by strong sales, beat the Street's top- and bottom-line expectations. The company declined to give specific guidance for its current quarter, but did offer an outlook that appeared to be above analysts' expectations.

"We have solidly returned the company to growth," said CEO Jen-Hsun Huang on a conference call.

Investors cheered the report, sending shares up $1.96, or 8.6%, in after-hours trading to $24.75.

In the period ending May 1, Nvidia earned $64.44 million, or 36 cents a share. That result was up sharply from the year-ago quarter when the company earned $21.35 million, or 12 cents a share.

Sales jumped 24% year over year to $583.85 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting the company to earn 28 cents a share on $581.41 million in sales in the quarter. The company's guidance in its last quarterly report implied earnings of about 24 cents to 32 cents a share on sales ranging from $566.5 million to $594.8 million.

Nvidia's second-quarter outlook was short on specific numbers or ranges. But company CFO Marvin Burkett did say that projected revenue would be "flat to slightly up" in the current quarter from the first quarter. Gross margins will likely be up 50 to 100 basis points as a portion of sales from the first quarter.

On the expense side, the company's operating costs will be up 5% to 10% from the first quarter, Burkett said. But the company expects its tax rate to decline in coming quarters -- possibly even in the current one.

Add that all up, and it looks like the company is expecting earnings to drop somewhat -- perhaps to about 30 cents a share assuming the pessimistic end of the company's expectations -- on flattish sales, compared with its first quarter.

NVIDIA's Huang admits to underestimating ATI (http://www.beyond3d.com/content/news/682)
"We underestimated the price performance of our competitor’s most recent GPU, which led us to mis-position our fall lineup. The first step of our response was to reset our price to reflect competitive realities. Our action put us again in a strong competitive position but we took hard hits with respect to our overall GPU ASPs and ultimately to our gross margins. The price action was particularly difficult since we are just ramping 55-nanometer and the weak market resulted in taking longer than expected to work through our 65-nanometer inventory."

IBM Brings NVIDIA Tesla GPUs Onboard (http://www.hpcwire.com/features/IBM-Brings-NVIDIA-GPUs-Onboard-94190024.html)
NVIDIA's GPU computing ambitions got a major boost today with IBM's announcement of the iDataPlex dx360 M3. The new HPC server pairs two Tesla GPUs with two CPUs inside the same server chassis. As such, IBM represents the first Tier 1 server vendor to bring CPU-GPU "hybrid" computing to the high performance computing market.

Nvidia's Second Quarter Revenue Set to Be Below Expectations By Over $100 Million

Intel to Pay NVIDIA Technology Licensing Fees of $1.5 Billio

Under the new agreement, Intel will have continued access to NVIDIA's full range of patents. In return, NVIDIA will receive an aggregate of $1.5 billion in licensing fees, to be paid in annual installments, and retain use of Intel's patents, consistent with its existing six-year agreement with Intel. This excludes Intel's proprietary processors, flash memory and certain chipsets for the Intel platform.
