http://undefined.cc/ Firefox ruft diese Seite auf

Hallo allerseits,

ich habe hier Firefox 1.0 mit installierten Tabbrowser-Extensions und Switchproxy-Toolbar.

Es funktioniert noch nicht alles so, wie es soll, vor allem aber gibt es eine Merkwürdigkeit: Das Wiederherstellen von Sessions nach einem Crash bewirkt manchmal, bei manchen Tabs, daß die Seite http://undefined.cc/ aufgerufen wird. Ein Weblog.

Weiß jemand, woher das kommt? Wurm? Scheiint mir hier eher unwahrscheinlich, aber wer weiß. Scan hat jedenfalls nichts ergeben, in der Registry findet man auch keinen Hinweis auf den Aufruf dieser Seite.

schau mal in der hosts ([windowsverzeichniss]\systems32\drivers\etc\) und schmeiss alle einträge ausser "127.0.0.1 localhost" raus...sofern da was anderes zu finden ist...
ich weiss jetzt nicht...aber verwaltet firefox ne eigene hosts? bzw error page...wo die eingetragen werden kann ich dir nicht sagen aber evtl wird als error page auf eben selbige seite gezeigt...müsstest dich schlau machen weil firefox is net mein ding ;)

Da ist nichts. IE und Opera verhalten sich im übrigen auch normal.

Surprise visit to my site?

This post addresses a comment left in the previous post about how the commenter was brought to my site.

For quite a while now there has been an interesting bug in Firefox that has been sending people to my site by accident. It seems like this has been happening a lot. I don't know the exact cause of this bug but I do know a bit. Some bug within Firefox or an extension is sending an undefined string...which literally gets passed as 'undefined' to the address bar. Any terms entered into the address bar that are not recognized as a url are passed to google and the first hit from the search is then returned. For example if you enter either 'undefined' or 'adam cox' you will find my site. If you search for 'canada' you will be brought to the Government of Canada website.

So to address the question presented by the commenter, no. I registered undefined.cc just over three years ago, back on December 4th of 2001. It took me some time to rise in the google rankings and so I would not have been found if this bug occured three years ago. This site was around long before Firefox. I'm trying to recall exactly why I chose undefined.cc. I know I went with the .cc extension because .com, .net, .org and .ca were already taken and they were selling .cc domains pretty cheap. After much searching through the archives of my hard drive I found the orginal text I had describing my choice of Undefined. And here it is:

I tried to come up with some catchy slogan or logo that would represent Me. But I couldn't come up with anything. I am starting to think that is not such a bad thing...


So there you have it. You got a bit of a bug fix and an 'Undefined' history lesson all in one.

I believe session saver conflicted with the tabbed browser extensions. When closing the browser with several tabs open, session saver saved them. But if tabbrowser was set to start normaly, ie Firefox startpage only, then that would open initially, but session saver would try to add the last sites into nonexistent tabs.

The real problem is there are too many independent extensions that aren't tested together. And it is unrealistic to test them all.
