History
New York was founded in 1624 by Dutch settlers. From 1626 on more and more Dutch immigrants settled in Manhattan and they called the growing development "New Amsterdam". Peter Minnewit a trader from Germany and one of the first immigrants, made a exceptional transaction with the Indians. He exchanged the entire island of Manhattan for a handful of glass beads, knives and hatchets. At this time , the inhabitants were slaves, convicts, religious fanatics and outcasts. Crimes were nothing unusual. In 1664 British soldiers conquested the city without a fight and called the city “New York”. New York got its first official document as a city in 1683, it had 4.000 inhabitants at that time. In 1693 Battery Park was armed with 92 canons to protect the city against attacks.
New York and the war of independence
In 1774 the British raised up the taxes to control the trade. After that and as sign of protest the New Yorkers took control of a british tea ship and throw the tea into the water. A year later the American war of independence started in Massachusetts. The declaration of independence was read out in New York 1776. From 1784 till 1790 New York was the capital of the young United States of America. In 1789 George Washington was appointed to the first president of the USA in New York`s Federal Hall. Slowly but surely the city became a economic metropolis. This development was supported by the foundation of the Wall Street.
19th century
In the beginning of the 19th century, the city grew faster than ever before. A turning point in the history of the city was the completion of the Eriekanals in 1825. The canal connects the lake and the Hudson river. Overnight the city became the biggest for dealing with goods in the American east coast. In the second half of the 19th century many settlers from Germany and Italy came to New York. This development required the opening of the Immigration Office in Ellis Island in 1892. In 1898 the City was composed of 5 Boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan.
20th century
Around 1900 New York was America`s industrial center. More than 70% of all companies had their headquarters in the city, two thirds of the imported goods came into the United States via New York Harbor.
On October 29th 1929, the "Black Friday", the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. Thousands of people lost their money, their jobs and their homes. But many important buildings were completed, f.e. the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.
1934 a new mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, was elected. He initiated aid programs and building projects. In 1945 LaGuardia had finally managed that New York was at the top of economic progress. Many German artists and scientists emigrated in the 1930ies and 1940ies to the United States.
After the end of the second world war it was a short phase of optimism, but then the industry moved away and the crime rate exploded. This development was stopped in 1993 by Rudoplh Giuliani, the new mayor of the city.
The 11th September 2001 was one of the worst days in the history of New York. Two planes controlled by Muslim terrorists crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. More than 3.000 people died.

Es heißt New York City und nicht New York. New York ist ein Bundesstaat.
