Ismael Dalramy lost his hands in 1996 with two quick blows of an ax.
He didn’t or couldn’t recall the pain of the blows.
But he remembered being ordered at gunpoint to place his wrists on a wooden stump dripping with the blood of his neighbours who were crawling on the ground around him trying to stem the flow of blood from their arms.

Cruelties like this happened in African countries such as Angola, Sierra Leon, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo
The diamond industry came under pressure, as it became clear that diamonds were playing a major role in these brutal massacres.
Diamonds were and are in great demand, because they are untraceable, highly valuable and easy to conceal ( means hide)
For these reasons they were and are often used by rebel groups in Africa to raise money and to finance arms and other illicit activities (means illegal).
Diamonds are smuggled out of conflict areas and usually taken to neighboring countries to be traded.
Once diamonds are brought to market, their origin is difficult to trace; after they are polished, they can no longer be identified.
People like Ismael Dalramy, who lived in villages of raw diamond production, were humiliated and put down to intimidate other villagers to mine diamonds for the oppressors.
The conditions were always inhuman. The diamond miners worked at gunpoint and weren’t allowed to rest, unless they were permitted to, otherwise they were shot.
When they were hungry, they weren’t allowed to look for food, otherwise they were shot as well. And when they had to go to the toilet, they had to do it right where they worked.
In my thesis I concentrated on what happened in Sierra Leone linked to blood diamonds.
The definition of blood diamonds are diamonds that are mined and sold by rebel movements particularly in Africa under the use to finance arms purchases.
In the case of Sierra Leone it was the Revolutionary United Front, short RUF, who terrorized the population.
The RUF, led by Foday Sankoh, launched its first attack in the diamond-rich Eastern Province of Sierra Leone in 1991.
The government of Sierra Leone was unable to put up significant resistance, because of its staggering economy and corruption
Within a month the RUF controlled much of the Eastern Province of the country.
The forced recruitment of child soldiers was also a feature of the rebel strategy and since the RUF was almost entirely composed of drugged teenagers (they made them use drugs and drink alcohol to be more aggressive), the rebels respected no boundaries.
There were mass rapes, torture, random executions and cannibalism.
For amusement they also played sick games, such as betting on which women they had made pregnant and then slit open their stomaches.
It was also very sick and sarcastic that when Sierra Leon’s president appealed to all the citizens to “join hands” for peace, the RUF began chopping off their victims hands as a response and dumping them on the steps of the presidential palace.
They also killed and mutilated (to mutilate means to cut off parts of the body) villagers to intimidate others, so that they would flee the diamond rich areas and the RUF would be in full control.
In return for diamonds the RUF bought arms and ammunition.
But there were also other strategic purposes of controlling the diamond mines.
They thought that when they get the diamond areas, the government will collapse economically and will not be able to finance its military.
And that’s exactly what happened.. many soldiers of the government were unsatisfied, switched sides and turned against the government.
On January 18, 2002 after 10years of civil war, President Kabbah declared the war officially over;
an estimated 50,000 people were killed, thousands had their arms or legs hacked off, and over 500,000 people fled to neighboring countries.
Even though the percentage of blood diamonds of the total production decreased from 16 to considerably less than 1% over the last 15years, its important that the consumers take action.
So in the future when one of you guys, wants to buy his wife or girlfriend a diamond ring or a diamond necklace, or one of you girls wishes for a diamond ring, you might want to make sure and insist via certificates that its conflict free.
