Es ist ein interessanter Schachzug.

Wobei: soweit ich gehört habe sollen die Fabs in ein neues Tochterunternehmen aufgehen welches dann von Ruiz geführt wird. Deshalb wohl auch sein Satz vom "enttäuschten Mann des Jahres".

Anders gesagt: AMD verliert dann wohl nur auf dem Papier die Kontrolle. Das ganze ist sehr sehr wahrscheinlich ein großer Steuer & co. Sparplan, der dazu die Bilanzen auch noch aufbessert und Investoren locken kann.

Interessant, wenn es Investitionsrisiken für Mutter-AMD etwas abfedert. Allerdings wird Mutter-AMD wohl noch auf absehbare Zeit die Mehrheit an der Tochter halten.

Wenn die Fabs derzeit tatächlich eher mäßig ausgelastet sind und man sogar Fertigungsaufträge "von außen" annähme, dann wäre man auf einem Schlag mit die allermodernste Foundry und könnte die Anlagen wirtschaftlich rentabler machen - aber das wird dauern. Mit so einer Strategie könnte man auch das Risiko in Kauf nehmen, in den USA die Milliarde Subvention einzukassieren (so was lässt man ungern auf dem Tisch liegen) und dort noch eine Fab aufzumachen.

Na mal sehen was wirklich gemeint wurde. Wafer stellt AMD ja nun auch nicht her. Sondern eher die ICs darauf ;)

Under the terms of x86 license agreement between Intel and AMD, the latter cannot outsource more than 20% of the x86 chips it sells to third party, thus, 80% of the company’s x86 output should be made in-house. Therefore it is generally unlikely that AMD sells off its fab. However, it may change the way its manufacturing operates to reduce its own expenses.

Wer weiß schon was AMD vor hat. Im aktuellen Fall wäre es zwar sehr schade, wenn AMD stark zurückrudert, könnte allerdings bitter nötig sein.
Für die Firma ist es an sich vielleicht günstiger so viel Boden wie nötig aufzugeben, um später wieder einen Vorstoß zu wagen.

Das kann jetzt vieles bedeuten. Wegfall von SOI, Verzicht auf moderne Fertigungsanlagen bis diese billiger werden (woanders auslaufen), Verringerung der Cache-Größe und/oder Vernachlässigung des High-End-Segments.

Vermutlich nur schlecht ausgedrückt. AMD stellt sehr wohl Wafer her - Wafer mit Prozessoren drauf, keine "Leerwafer".
