Dampflokomotiven wurden in China erstmals kommerziell für Warentransporte eingesetzt, als die Kaiping Tramway (auch Kaiping Colliery Railway) 1881 eröffnet wurde – eine Strecke, die primär Kohle aus den Minen in Tangshan transportierte. Dies markierte den Beginn des regulären Frachtverkehrs mit Dampfloks auf chinesischem Boden.Der Betrieb dauerte insgesamt rund 141 Jahre, bis der letzte reguläre Dampf-Frachtzug in China am 25. April 2022 auf der Sandaoling-Kohlebergwerksbahn in der Provinz Shaanxi fuhr. Diese Strecke war bis zuletzt für den Kohletransport genutzt und galt als der weltweit letzte kommerzielle Dampf-Frachtbetrieb. Auf den Hauptlinien des chinesischen Eisenbahnnetzes endete der Einsatz von Dampfloks für Fracht bereits Ende 2005, wobei der Übergang zu Diesel- und Elektrolokomotiven in den 1990er Jahren beschleunigt wurde.
