"Radeon 8500's started showing up in local stores today, so I'm playing with one of my very own now. The anisotropic filter is distinctly better behaved than it was on the original Radeon. It still shows patches of undersampling and oversampling, as one would expect, but seemingly of more sensible degrees. The drivers on the installation CD appear to be handling some of the textures in Q3A a little oddly, though... I'm not getting the highest resolution mipmaps on some surfaces (using standard isotropic filtering modes... not an anisotropic filtering problem).

Sadly, the newest member of the Radeon family still can't mipmap cubic textures :("
