China's first homemade sci-fi blockbuster, "The Wandering Earth," amazed U.S. moviegoers with its bold imagination, winning applause and encouragement for the Chinese filmmakers' commendable foray into the sci-fi sphere.
The movie is based on a short story of the same name by Liu Cixin, China's top Chinese science-fiction writer and the first in China to win the prestigious Hugo Award. It takes place in a future on the brink of apocalypse, where the dying sun threatens to extinguish all life on earth. The United World Government opts for an audacious plan to physically move the entire planet to orbit a safer, distant star.
It was released in 29 U.S. cities on Feb. 5, Chinese New Year, in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles and attracted a lot of attention for being China's first big budget sci-fi blockbuster, a genre that Hollywood has dominated for decades.
Many moviegoers were impressed by the visual effects and core values of the movie which is different from the Hollywood style.
"That is not just a simple blockbuster. It was your attitude towards earth, towards the universe and towards the harmony between the universe and the people," said an moviegoer.
"It was a good effort, I think. And definitely the effects were excellent," said another moviegoer.
At a cost of around 50 million U.S. dollars -- a hefty price tag for a Chinese sci-fi film -- and an astonishing four-year production schedule and a crew of 7,000, "The Wandering Earth" is China's most ambitious sci-fi film to date.
Some believe it will encourage more Chinese filmmakers to enter the sphere.
"I think this is a great movie and previously I hadn't any expectation for Chinese sci-fi movie, but this one really shocked me. And I think there will be more this kind of movies in the future," said a moviegoer.
"The Wandering Earth" has become the winner of the Chinese box office during the week-long Spring Festival holiday that ended on Sunday, taking in a huge 1.94 billion yuan (288 million U.S. dollars) in just six days.
