afaik this is not such a new result of written language research. evreyone can check this by himself becaus if you wouldt read letter by letter you would be really slow reading any text.

the same goes for the chinese or japanese where you have symbols instead of single letters, which is much more difficult to learn because you cannot split words in singel letters. but when you know the meaning of the symbols it's not that difficult. what makes it difficult is the fact you have to learn about 3000 symbols to understand a newspaper article.
