1) first search WWW for file directx-dx9uninstaller.zip (33kb)
2) search for EXTRACT.EXE (it can be found in win98 boot (rescue)diskiette
3) copy extract.exe to windows\system directory
4) extract files from directx-dx9uninstaller.zip to c:\dx9u
5) run system in safe mode
6) insert ORYGINAL windows XP cd to your compact disk
7) run undx9.bat file from c:\dx9u directory
8) follow the instructions until message "Ready to proceed to Phase 2" if you see some errors (ie unable... during extraction) read "when something goes wrong A"
9) follow the instructions and if you see some errors (ie cannot copy...)read "when something goes wrong B"
10) follow the instructions and if you see some errors (ie window "installation failed")read "when something goes wrong C"
_______when something goes wrong :)______________
there were following errors in my case :)
- extract.exe was not found on my system - I have to copy it from win98 diskiette
A - files dxdllreg.exe, d3d9.dll, ksuser.dll, pid.dll was NOT found on CD I have found them by search in the windows directory and copied it to the dxtemp\system32 directory (created by dx9uninstaller)
B - some files in windows directory cannot be overwritten due to usage I have switched off all sound devices in hardware manager - it worked :)
C - at least undx9.bat file cannot execute %SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 dxvfix.inf - i have install c:\dx9u\dxvfix.inf manually (rightclick on it and select install)

after this small war with dx9 i have finnaly returned to the DX8.1 from the widows XP CD

WARNING !!! YOU ARE DOING ALL FOR YOUR OWN RISK !!!!
SOME problems may be version-specific (i have used windows xp home PL)
so you can encounter different errors... or none errors at all :)

GOOD LUCK
